Proverbs 25:28 "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls."

The walls of the ancient cities were built high and built strong. A city without walls was exposed to every assault and attack of the enemy. The physical protection of the city was dependant upon the strength of the walls. The first thing that the enemy attacked was the walls of the city, and if the city did not take action against the enemy, the walls would be broken down, giving the enemy complete access to the entire city, making them more difficult to defeat.

Now here the Bible points out that our spirits are like those ancient cities. Over time, if we dont tend to our walls they will be broken down by the enemy. We face many enemies in our Christian lives today. The devils forces are everywhere we look. Our own flesh works against day in and day out. The influences of an ever corrupting society creeping into our homes and churches.

As Christians, we must not only build higher and stronger walls, we must also tend to those walls. Making sure, that as they are attacked, (which you can count on) that we are repairing any damage caused by the enemies of our spirits. The spiritual walls that we are to build, are walls of protection, so when temptations come, and when the attacks come, our spirits don't become prey to every corrupt passion in this life.

I often say that one has to live the Christian life on purpose. The walls are not going to build themselves. Today, ask God to give you not only the strength, but also the materials to build your walls higer and stronger. Get control of your spirit - and keep it protected behind the walls.
